Whale Watching and Swimming Guidelines: Respecting Dominica’s Gentle Giants
To ensure the safety of both marine life and visitors, Dominica has established clear guidelines for whale watching and swimming with whales. These rules help protect these majestic creatures and their delicate ecosystems while allowing for unforgettable encounters.
Distress signs: If a whale shows signs of disturbance, such as abrupt dives or changes in behavior, all activities within a close proximity with the animal must cease immediately.
Approach Zones: Respecting Whale Space
When observing whales in their natural habitat, it’s vital to maintain safe distances to minimize disturbance. There are there designated zones:
1. Approach Zone (1000m–500m)
- Vessels must reduce speed to no-wake speed (<15 knots).
- A maximum of five vessels are allowed within this zone at a time
- Boats must communicate with each other to coordinate movements around whales.
2. Watching Zone (500m–50m)
- Engines should be placed in neutral or turned off to reduce noise.
- Whales should never be approached head-on but from the side or rear.
- No swim is allowed in this zone
3. Restricted Zone (within 50m)
- No vessels or swimmers are allowed within this zone unless holding a government permit.
- If a vessel accidentally enters this zone, engines must be disengaged immediately to let whales move away safely/ boat must carefully move away from the animal
- Everyone within this zone must comply to all guidelines or face penalties
Swimming with Whales: Rules for Responsible Interaction
Swimming with whales is a privilege activity which requires a government permits. Here’s how activities are regulated:
Permit
Acquiring a permit is a tedious process which involves application through a registered water sports operator. The permit application process takes can take up to 2 months. If the application has been approved a government permit will then be issued
General Rules
- A safety and security briefing must be given by the captain before beginning the activity
- A review of the rules and regulations will be conducted by a trained guide
- A trained guide must be present in the water along with a maximum of three guest participants
- Guest participants and guide must maintain a respectful distance and allow whales to control the interaction.
- Touching, chasing, or feeding whales is prohibited.
- Freediving near the animals is prohibited
- All activity must be conducted within the designated sperm whale reserve
- To avoid confusion to the animals the guide and participating guides must remain together as a group
- Boats must move away after dropping swimmers and remain in neutral until swimmers are ready to be recovered.
